The hipster-hop emcee, Childish Gambino, more respectively known as Donald Glover, the sitcom writer, comedian, actor, as well as the star and creator of the new hit FX series, Atlanta, a hip-hop inspired comedy, has just won two Golden Globes for Best Television Series (Musical or Comedy) and Best Performance By An Actor In A Television Series (Musical or Comedy), while wearing a custom-made brown velour Gucci suit.
And, during his acceptance speech, he managed to keep it gangster and shouted out Migos, “not for being in the show, but for making Bad and Boujee, like, that’s the best song…ever.”
Anyways, on top of collecting Golden Globes, Childish Gambino just dropped his third studio album, Awaken, My Love!, on December 2nd, 2016.
But, that album wasn’t exactly hip-hop, either.
It was Gambino’s borderless artistry venturing beyond his sort-of hip-hop beginnings to messily blend psychedelic acid-rock with space-age, effect-heavy crooning/R&B/funk/soul/tribalism/whatever he vibes; a vibrant expression of Glover’s ability to side-step any cultural labels before critiques or writers are able to cast-type him, or box him in, to one category, or stereotype for too long.
Just look at his resume. What’s he running from?
Or, maybe, it’s what he is running towards…
Awaken, My Love! debuted at number two on the Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, with the lead single, Me and Your Mama.
But, in the spirit of hip-hop, here’s Sweatpants ft. Problems from his 2014 release, Because the Internet…
Because, frankly, this is a hip-hop website, and it was and still is a dope hip-hop song.
Congrats, Gambino, from UIYB!
